Solfege Story: learn to play by ear

An organic, systematic approach using familiar/popular songs

No knowledge of music theory is necessary

Just as we learn to speak our native language grammatically without conscious knowledge of the rules of grammar, we can also learn the tonal underpinnings of music and song without knowing music theory.

This system of learning is based upon the Auditory Feedback Loop, which is the way we learn languages organically: If something sounds off, we self-correct.

An organic, systematic song-based approach

Intervals don’t occur in a vacuum. They occur organically within meaningful musical experiences called Songs.

This system of learning teaches us to recognize musical intervals within the context of a song. Tones/Pitches are always in reference to a tonal center – a “home note” – called “Do”.

We start with simple songs and progress systematically to more difficult songs, using a library of songs that many are already familiar with.

Master pitches no matter what your music instrument is

Whether you play the piano, or the violin, or use your voice, the skills acquired in Solfege Story will stand you in good stead for your musical journey.

A bonus for piano players: an option to overlay a piano keyboard! This allows you to familiarize yourself with the organization of pitches – a.k.a. “Scales” – and how the relative pitches “do re mi” map to the piano keys on your keyboard.

Optimized for children; great for adults too

Native mastery of a language is a natural process during childhood. In fact, the earlier you begin learning the language of music, the better.

The song library of Solfege Story uses familiar songs from Mother Goose, nursery rhymes, folk songs and more, making it kid-friendly.

Adults will also find the song progression helpful, because they can spend energy figuring out the tonal structure of a song instead of spending it memorizing unfamiliar songs.

Solfege Story Keyboard Mode

Play along to songs from the radio or anywhere

Solfege Story offers a Keyboard mode where the app becomes the instrument!

Figure out the “home note” of a song you hear on the radio, set the “home note” on Solfege Story to the same note, and voila! You can now play along, or even have your own solo performance!
