Learning solfege and using solfege to play by ear is a bit like learning to ride a bicycle.
There’s an initial period of difficulty. That’s because we’re operating on the level of conscious effort – remembering to press the pedals, steer the handlebars, remembering not to stop, and so on.
Later on, there’s a breakthrough where we suddenly operate on the level of unconscious mastery. We stop worrying about riding or pedaling, and we’re merely thinking of the destination. Same with learning solfege. At a point, we stop counting pitches or intervals, relying instead on the deeper, intuitive level of what sounds wrong, and what sounds right.
It is for the same reason a child imprinted with hearing language from native speakers grows up with an unconscious mastery of the language despite not having a conscious understanding of the rules of grammar. They rely on the deeper, intuitive level of mastery where they do it simply because it “sounds right”.
Try Solfege Story over a period of time and see if your child acquires this unconscious mastery!
